Stuart Maunder

Director

Stuart Maunder has directed for all the major opera companies in his native Australia. Moving to the United Kingdom 1991, he combined a career in Australia with engagements in the United Kingdom, Europe and the USA. He was Artistic Administrator of Opera Australia from 1999 until 2003 becoming Executive Producer in January 2004.  Most recently he directed the world premiere of the new musical Dusty, which performed across Australia in 2006, as well as new productions of The Pirates of Penzance (2006), The Tales of Hoffmann (2007) for Opera Australia. In 2008, he will direct a national touring production of My Fair Lady.

Australian Productions include The Gondoliers, Manon, The Gypsy Princess, Lindy, Il Signor Bruschino, La scala di Seta, Don Pasquale, Die Fledermaus, Nabucco and Romèo et Juliette (Opera Australia), The Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe, Don Pasquale, La Traviata and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Victoria State Opera), Carmen, The Mikado and La Traviata (State Opera of South Australia), Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Pasquale and Die Entführung aus dem SeraiI (Lyric Opera of Queensland) and Patience, The Merry Widow (West Australia Opera). For Stopera in Canberra, he has directed Der Kaiser von Atlantis and Der Zar lässt sich Photographieren, Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Angélique, Hin und Zuruck and Hand of Bridge.

In Europe and the U.S.A: The Pirates of Penzance (D’Oyly Carte, U.K), Die Zauberflöte (British Youth Opera, U.K), Rigoletto and Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Stowe Opera Festival, U.K), Trial by Jury, (Covent Garden Festival, UK), The Mikado and La Fille du Régiment (Opera Pacific, Los Angeles), Don Pasquale, The Magic Flute and Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Opus Festival, France), Macbeth (Northern Opera , U.K), Carmen, La Boheme, Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Opera Brava, U.K) and The Marriage of Figaro in Hong Kong. He has staged La Boheme and L’Elisir d’Amore at the Royal Opera House as well as working as a staff director on a repertoire of fifteen operas. He also rehearsed the Royal Opera’s production of Guillaume Tell for the Teatro San Carlo, Lisbon.  Stuart featured in the BBC’s television series TopScore (an introduction to opera for children).

Music theatre credits include Fiddler on the Roof (The Australian Opera), My Fair Lady, A Little Night Music, Evita (Canberra Theatre Centre), Bernstein’s Mass (V.A.C. at the Myer Music Bowl), Gershwin – the Musical (Victorian Arts Centre), Company (Rose Bruford, UK), Cabaret, The Yeomen of the Guard (Brisbane Light Opera), Marry Me A Little (Wimbledon Studio Theatre London), Where Do You Start? (Jermyn Street Theatre London), Noel and Gertie (City of London Festival), Side by Side by Sondheim, Tomfoolery (Southern Cross Theatre, Canberra), A Song to Sing O (Australian tour) and six productions of Christmas at the House for the Sydney Opera House.

Staged concerts include New Year’s Eve at The Sydney Opera House (’92 – ‘98) and the Sydney Opera House Twentieth Anniversary Awards, which was televised. He has devised and directed Lyric Opera of Queensland’s Starburst series. He has also directed large-scale concerts for Melbourne Summer Music Festival, Canberra Festival, BHP Sydney Conference and Dame Joan Sutherland’s 70th Birthday Gala at Australia House London.
