Richard Roberts

Set Designer

Richard’s designs have featured in the productions of most of the major theatre, dance and opera companies in Australia.  He was for several years the resident designer at the State Theatre Company of South Australia, and between 1991 and 1996, the Head of Design at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.  He is currently the Head of the School of Production at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Credits for theatre include Take Me Out for Melbourne Theatre Company, The Sunshine Club for Sydney Theatre Company, The Sapphires for Melbourne Theatre Company and Company B at Belvoir Street and Riverland for Windmill Theatre Company for the Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth Festivals.  For dance he has designed the sets for the award winning Molto Vivace for The Australian Ballet and the sets for The Australian Ballet/State Opera of South Australia co-production Requiem.   For television, his credits include The Battlers and Five Times Dizzy, and he designed the feature film I Own the Racecourse.

He won Green Room Awards for Best Design in 1998 for Stolen at Playbox, in 2000 for Life After George at MTC, in 2001 for the set for Requiem, and in 2004 for Molto Vivace both for The Australian Ballet.

He was the only Australian designer represented at the recent World Stage Design 2005 exhibition held in Toronto with his designs for Riverland.

Most recently Richard designed the set for Dirty Dancing, set and costumes for MTC’s production of Hitchcock Blonde and the set for Stephen Baynes new ballet, Raymonda.
